Citizen’s forum “Stengefort Naturno”
The Citizens' Forum is firmly anchored in the manifestation calendar and takes place once a year in the municipality of Steinfort. This is a participatory workshop that enables citizens to give their input on current issues and thus contribute to the sustainable development of our municipality.
Saturday, 15 June 2024, was the third edition of this citizens' forum, with the theme: "Stengefort Naturno". The aim of this practical workshop was to design a fictitious public place in a natural way.
But what exactly is a nature-orientated design? The idea here is to take nature as a model right from the planning stage so that the site provides a habitat for many different animals and plants. To achieve this, it is important to integrate different structures and pay attention to diversity.
And what use is that to us? The challenges of climate change are clear: heavy and continuous rainfall is increasing, which is causing flooding because our sealed soils are saturated. On the other hand, we are facing heatwaves that make living conditions more difficult for humans, animals and plants and cause water shortages. A nature-oriented design counteracts these challenges because it maximises water storage and promotes biodiversity. These benefits in turn strengthen climate resilience, i.e. the resilience of the municipality of Steinfort to global warming. It is a positive cycle!
5 different places were designed as part of the workshop and there were no limits to creativity. The citizens were provided with natural materials such as fresh and dried plants, branches, soil, clay, stones and much more. People also received information from the Ëmweltberodung Lëtzebuerg (EBL), which was present with its information stand on the theme of "Ouni Pestiziden". Thank you to everyone who participated or helped organise the event.
This year's citizens' forum was also the starting signal for the new "Stengefort Naturno" campaign. The aim of the campaign is to educate people even more specifically about the topic and thereby raise awareness of the importance of nature-orientated, insect-friendly and biodiverse municipalites. So keep your eyes peeled for more events on this topic and together we can make Steinfort more environmentally friendly.
